The Moon Has No Heart
The moon has no heart
Else why did she fly down the west of the sky
When my lover and I had to part?
The moon has no heart
How sly was her art
To light up the night when our love was still bright
But when from my side he did start
The moon had no heart
He is gone, and I weep
And I never shall sleep
But still, in the West
With her hand on her breast
Not a tear in her eye
She stares from the sky
And I cry-y
The moon has no heart
Else why did she fly down the west of thе sky
When my lover and I had to part?
The moon has no heart
There is a Vine
There is a vine growing on my garden wall
And it is brown and withered in the fall
And in the spring, its leaves are green and blossoms all aflame
But spring or fall, still I love you just the same
There is a gate halfway down my garden wall
And in the night, I lock it, bolts and all
And in the day, it's open wide to all who would come through
But day or night, it is never locked for you
There is a tree growing by my garden gate
And year by year it seems to stand and wait
And here am I, beneath the tree, for I am waiting too
And oh, my love, I will always wait for you
One by One
We go walking in the dark
We go walking out at night
And it's not as lovers go two by two, to and fro
But it's one by one
One by one in the dark
We go walking out at night
As we wander through the grass
We can hear each other pass
But we're far apart
Far apart in the dark
We go walking out at night
With the grass so dark and tall
We are lost past recall
If the moon is down
And the moon is down
We are walking in the dark
If I had your hand in mine
I could shine
I could shine like the morning sun
Like the sun
Sorrow is My Name
O keep on sleeping
When I pass your door
And keep on hoping
I will come no more
To me, tomorrow
Will be all the same
For sorrow, sorrow
Sorrow is my name
O keep on singing
When you hear my feet
And keep on dreaming
If your dream is sweet
And you may borrow
Candles for your game
But still your sorrow's
Coming just the same.
And if you fear me
I will come in haste
And if you love me
I will go away
And if you scorn me
I will lay you waste
And if you know me
I will come to stay
So keep on singing
When you hear my feet
And keep on dreaming
If your dream is sweet
To me, tomorrow
Will be all the same
For sorrow, sorrow
Sorrow is my name
Lullaby for P. Bruce
A ship sails tonight for Singapore
A ship sails tonight for Italy
A ship sails tonight for dream country
I wonder which ship will carry me
It's three weeks to sail to Italy
It's four weeks to sail to Singapore
So I'll take the ship for dream country
And morning bright, I'll be back on shore
Honeybee
Honeybee
Go and tell the starling
To go and tell my darling
To hurry home to me
Honeybee
Say I'm sad and lonely
And say I'm wishing only
His loving smile to see
We had a fight and he's been gone
An hour by the clock upon the shelf
He was right, but I'm too proud
To go and tell him so myself
So, honeybee
Go and tell the starling
To go and tell my darling
To hurry home to me
We Lived Alone
We lived alone
My house and I
We had the earth
We had the sky
I had a lamp against the dark
And I was happy as a lark
I had a stove and a window screen
I had a table painted green
Sat on a chair with a broken back
Wearing a pretty potato sack
I had a rug upon the floor
And roses grew around my door
Though my estate was never high
My house was snug and so was I
We lived alone
My house and I
We had the earth
We had the sky
I had a lamp against the dark
And I was happy as a lark
I had a stove and a window screen
I had a table painted green
Sat on a chair with a broken back
Wearing a pretty potato sack
I had a rug upon the floor
And roses grew around my door
